The Social Security Administration has released information on the number of claims for disability benefits filed and approved in 2017. For 2017, there were 2,179,928 applications filed. There were a total of 762,141 awards or allowances of disability benefits allowed. That equates to a 35% allowance rate. This percentage equates to the number of claims which were allowed or granted on the initial application. Additional claims are granted after appeals, with an unofficial overall allowance rate of approximately 50%.
