We are often asked how long it will take to receive Disability Benefits.
According to the Social Security Administration, “Generally, if your application for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is approved, you must wait five months before you can receive your first SSDI benefit payment. This means you would receive your first payment in the sixth full month after the date we find that your disability began.”
Unfortunately, there isn’t an easy answer to this question and it is not always that simple. It is dependent on many factors including:
- How much staff the Social Security Administration (SSA) has available to process claims
- The amount of time it takes to gather your records
- and how severe your condition is.
An older individual with very well documented and very severe impairments will likely be granted sooner than someone with less severe impairment.
If you are denied benefits, you should always appeal, as many people are granted a hearing with an Administrative Law Judge after they receive denials on their claim.
The assistance of an experienced attorney is very helpful in making sure that all of the proper documents and information are provided in a timely manner so that your claim will process as quickly as possible.
