Faster Decisions for Severe Disabilities
On August 12, 2024, Martin O’Malley, Commissioner of Social Security, announced the addition of nine new Compassionate Allowances (CAL) conditions and revisions to two existing ones. The Compassionate Allowances program is designed to quickly identify disability claims that meet Social Security’s strict standards due to the applicant’s severe medical condition or disease. For many of these conditions, a diagnosis alone is enough to approve benefits.
To date, this program has provided relief to over one million individuals with severe disabilities, offering accelerated approvals for those who urgently need support. With this update, the list of Compassionate Allowance conditions now includes 287 qualifying diagnoses.
A Commitment to Faster Decisions
Commissioner O’Malley emphasized his mission to reduce delays for disability applicants, stating:
“I am steadfastly committed to reducing the amount of time people wait to receive a decision on their disability claim, and we are making progress.”
He further noted:
“Compassionate Allowances helps in this effort by accelerating the disability application process for people who are likely to get approved for benefits due to the severity of their medical condition.”
How Does the Compassionate Allowances Program Work?
When someone applies for disability benefits, Social Security must gather medical records to make an accurate determination. Thanks to advanced Health Information Technologies, the agency now uses electronic medical records to streamline the process. This technology allows Social Security to:
- Quickly obtain medical records
- Review them efficiently
- Make faster decisions for applicants
This speed is particularly critical for conditions covered under the Compassionate Allowances program, which often involve life-threatening diagnoses where time is of the essence.
New Compassionate Allowance Conditions
The following conditions were added to the Compassionate Allowances list:
- Bainbridge-Ropers Syndrome
- Costello Syndrome
- Adult Heart Transplant Wait List (Status Levels 1-4)
- Child Heart Transplant Wait List (revised: Status Levels 1A/1B)
- Histiocytic Malignancies
- Histiocytosis Syndromes (revised)
- Neonatal Marfan Syndrome
- PACS1 Syndrome
- Plasmablastic Lymphoma
- Renal Medullary Carcinoma
- Snijders Blok-Campeau Syndrome
These additions join a growing list that already includes conditions such as aggressive cancers, acute leukemias, genetic and congenital disorders, and other debilitating diagnoses.
