Young Workers Have a 1 in 3 Chance of Death or Disability Before Retirement

retirement-age

The Social Security Administration recently released interesting statistics on an individual’s chances of becoming disabled and unable to work before reaching full retirement age.  These projections are based on an individual who is currently age 20 and who will have a full retirement age of 67. More than 1/3 of men will either become disabled or unable to work and 30% of women.  We would actually guess that for older individuals the percentages would be somewhat higher. These statistics clearly illustrate the need for a strong Social Security system which will insure the financial stability of disabled or deceased individuals and their dependents.  It’s troubling to think that our lives may not be as long and productive as we hope, but it’s more troubling not to have a back up financial plan in place in times of need.
