How Does the SSA Determine Disability

This video explains the steps the Social Security Administration (SSA) uses to determine eligibility for disability benefits. It covers the five-step sequential evaluation process, starting with whether the claimant is working, followed by the severity of their impairment, and if it meets SSA’s listed impairments. It also assesses if the individual can perform past work or adjust to other work, given their limitations. The process emphasizes medical records, work history, and age.

  1. Work Activity: Is the claimant currently working and earning above a certain amount?
  2. Severity: Is the impairment severe and expected to last at least 12 months?
  3. Listed Impairments: Does the condition match or equal a listed disability?
  4. Past Work: Can the person still perform their previous job?
  5. Other Work: Can the person adjust to other types of work?

The SSA uses medical records, work history, and other factors to make this determination.
